Buenos Aires, Argentina, October 5, 2016 – Inspired by the opening speech of FIVB President Ary Graca, the international governing body’s newly formed Athletes Commission held its first ever meeting today in Buenos Aires, on the sidelines of the 35th World Congress.
The meeting followed the presentation of the members of the Commission to the Congress participants earlier in the day.
Presided over by Brazil legend and Athens 2004 Olympic champion Giba, the Comission discussed athletes’ career paths and explored ways to provide education and knowledge for after their playing careers.
Also in the works is the creation of an Athletes Hub, to improve communication and assistance to active and retired athletes.
The Commission also discussed recommendations by President Graça, looking ahead to their next meeting at the start of next year in Lausanne, during the round of all the FIVB’s Commissions meetings.
The Athletes Commission was first presented at Volleyball House on Copacabana Beach during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
