Beach Volleyball News

Canberra, Australia, March 1, 2018 – Under perfect beach volleyball conditions, teams from all over Oceania descended on the Australian capital for the action-packed day one of the Oceania Qualification for Youth Olympic Games in Argentina and the 2018 FIVB U19 World Championships in China.

The women’s event became talk of the town, with Australian top seeds Coleman/Smith up against second seeds Otene/Maya Dickson from New Zealand on the Centre Court at the Lyneham Beach Volleyball Complex just after lunch.

New Zealand came out strong, with Australia attempting to catch up with the tough rivals’ tactics in the first set. However, the Kiwi duo proved steadier to eventually win 21-18. The second set saw the Australians prove their ability as they maintained their tempo for the set win 21-12.

The decider was at hotly-contested affair, revealing the class of both teams. The formidable visitors shone through their skills to eventually close out the set with a scintillating 20-18 win and the match.

The men’s competition had some great rallies and big games. The results saw the top two seedings in Australia’s Landers/Nicolaidis and New Zealand’s Joe/Jeffrey remain undefeated and yet to face each other and both have progressed through to the semi- finals.

Teams competing in the three-day event include Australia, New Zealand, Vanuatu, American Samoa, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands.

However, Solomon Islands experienced difficulties in obtaining Visas and therefore did not arrive before their scheduled games on Thursday. As a result, they have forfeited these games.

Their women’s team are due to arrive later on Thursday night and will be present for the Friday’s games, while the men’s team will not be present for their game on Friday morning and therefore this game will be a forfeit.

Matches continue Friday afternoon from 3.30pm.
