Wellington,New Zealand, March 6,2018- The New Zealand under-19 women’s beach volleyball team of Tamara Otene and Maya Dickson secured the gold medal at the Oceania Under 19 Beach Championships with an impressive straight set win over Australia’s Aimee Coleman and Tiaan Smith in Canberra.

In a thrilling final Otene and Dickson, of Auckland and New Plymouth respectively, took out the top seeded Australians with a score of 21-13 and 21-12.

The win also qualifies New Zealand a place for the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina and Under 19 World Championships in China, both to be held later this year.

The New Zealand junior men’s pair of Keegan Joe and David Jeffrey also claimed a place on the podium with a strong silver medal performance.

Joe and Jeffrey, both of New Plymouth, couldn’t quite hold off Ky Landers and Mark Nicholaidis of Australia, settling for silver with a score of 21-13 and 21-14.

The top-two placing ensures Joe and Jeffrey a main draw place at the 2018 Under-19 World Championships, as well the possibility of another spot for New Zealand at the Youth Olympic Games pending an allocation decision from the Asian Volleyball Confederation.
