Dong Ha, Vietnam, March 27, 2015 – Two unbeaten teams, Thong Tin Lien Viet Post Bank and DPR Korea’s 4.25 Sports Club, top their pools at the end of the round-robin preliminaries of the 9th VTV Binh Dien Cup 2015 International Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Thursday.

Thong Tin LVPB will go up against VTV Binh Dien Long An in the all-Vietnamese semi-final clash, with the 4.25 Sports Club from DPR Korea taking on Kazakhstan’s Astana Club in the other semi-finals. Vietnam’s Tien Nong Thanh Hoa and Vietinbank Club, Japan’s Tenri Club and China’s Fujian Club will play in the 5th-8th place playoffs.

The invitational tournament kicked off on March 21 at the Quang Tri Gymnasium, Vietnam and will run through Sunday, March 29. A total of nine teams including four home sides tested their mettle in the nine-day meet.

Pool A comprises Vietnam’s VTV Binh Dien Long An and Tien Nong Thanh Hoa, DPR Korea’s 4.25 Sports Club, Malaysia and Japan’s Tenri Club, while Vietnam’s Thong Tin LVPB and Vietinbank Club, Kazakhstan’s Astana Club and China’s Fujian Club are in Pool B.

Tien Nong Thanh Hoa delighted home fans with an impressive 3-1 (25-11 20-25 25-19 25-14) victory over Malaysia in the March 21 curtain-raising match, which was followed by the opening ceremony. The day ended with VTV Binh Dien Long An’s convincing straight-set 25-21 25-14 25-19 win over Japan’s Tenri Club.

On the second day of the competition, VTV Binh Dien Long An made it two in a row following a scintillating 25-10 25-17 25-22 victory over Tien Nong Thanh Hoa in the all-Vietnamese affair. Kazakhstan’s Astana Club proved too strong for Fujian Club to brush off the Chinese counterparts in straight sets 25-22 25-20 25-17, while Vietnam’s Thong Tin LVPB powered past compatriots Vietinbank Club 25-18 29-27 25-17.

Thong Tin LVPB remained on course on the third day when they came from the  first-set down 23-25 to win the following three sets 25-10 25-22 25-22 and the encounter against China’s Fujian Club. The 4.25 Sports Club from DPR Korea got off to a flying start in the tournament by pulling off a straight-set 25-17 25-13 25-15 victory over Vietnam’s Tien Nong Thanh Hoa, while Japan’s Tenri Club tasted their first victory after overcoming Malaysia in four sets 19-25 25-18 25-21 25-15.

The first-round contest continued through Thursday which saw the 4.25 Sports Club remain invincible in Pool A. The Koreans captured consecutive four wins including a hard-fought 3-1 (23-25 25-23 25-22 25-23) victory over strong VTV Binh Dien Long An 3-1 on March 26. Thong Tin LVPB also did likewise to make a clean sweep of victories in their Pool B.

At the end of the pool round-robin preliminaries on Thursday, the unbeaten 4.25 Sports Club captured the top spot of Pool A with 12 points from straight four wins, followed by Vietnam’s Binh Dien Long An with nine points from three wins against one loss.

Tenri Club from Japan came in third place with six points from two wins against two losses, with Vietnam’s Tien Nong Thanh Hoa in fourth place with three points from one win against three losses. Winless Malaysia were empty-handed and had to clash out from the competition with the ninth position.

As expected, Vietnam’s Thong Tiin LVPB topped Pool B with nine points from straight three wins, while Kazakhstan’s Astana Club finished second with five points from two wins against one loss. China’s Fujian Club had to be content with the third position with two points from one win against two losses. Vietnam’s Vietinbank Club came in fourth place with the similar two points from successive three losses.

Friday is the rest day and the competition will resume on Saturday in the 5th-8th place playoffs and the semi-finals.
