Queensland, Australia, January 15, 2016 – Victorians Josh Court and Damien Schumann have made it two from two in 2016, winning the Queensland Open title one week after snaring the South Australian crown.
Court and Schumann beat the experienced pairing of Bo Soderberg and Joshua Slack in windy conditions in the final at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast.
All four players are part of Volleyball Australia’s high performance program.
In the women’s competition, American Brittany Tiegs teamed up with Sydney’s Christie Jenkins to beat 2012 London Olympian Becchara Palmer and Sarah Battaglene in the final.
While usually based in Melbourne, Schumann and Court have spent recent weeks in Adelaide working with the high performance program.
“I think training with the men’s Volleyroos squad over the last couple of weeks, while we have made a few small changes, has really helped with just making what we had more consistent,” Schumann said.
“The conditions were tough and quite windy, but every beach volleyball event has something tough.
“Last week it was 38 in Adelaide, so at least it wasn’t that hot this weekend.”
Jenkins was excited to break through for her first tour title.
“We battled some epic conditions and some great teams to take out the Queensland Open,” she said.
“Amazing playing by my partner, Brittany Tiegs, in the final.”
Australia’s top teams will now turn their attention to next weekend’s Australian Champions, also to be played at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast.
