Tehran, Iran, March 16, 2016 – After 153 matches contested, the Premier League of Iran came to a close with Sarmayeh Bank emerging as champions following the sudden withdrawal of Tehran Paykan in the final match.
Tehran Paykan coped with deep grief of the shock death of their head coach Mr Reza Ebrahimi, 41, who passed away on the night ahead of the final match. Their players did not feel very well and were not ready for the competition. As the team’s conditions were getting worse caused by the sorry tale, Tehran Paykan decided to withdraw from the final clash, leaving Sarmayeh Bank to run away with the title without sweating.
As a result, the classification match between Urmai Shahrdari and Khorasan Samen Al-hojaj has undergone changes. However, the result will soon be released after the organisers have their final decision.
Importantly, the matches could not be postponed as Iran is approaching the New Year (Nowruz) when the Iran national players have to rest during the holiday and will get back to the training stints on March 27 in preparation for the FIVB World Olympic Qualification Tournament at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Japan from May 28 to June 5, 2016. Iran are due to take on Australia in their opening match on May 28.
