Binan, Philippines, September 10, 2016 – Japan’s NEC Red Rockets dethroned Bangkok Glass of Thailand in a thrilling five-set cliffhanger (22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 15-7) in the “SMM” 2016 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship semi-finals at the Alonte Sports Arena on Saturday.

NEC Red Rockets will take on China’s Ba’Yi Shenzheng, which wedged out Altay VC from Kazakhstan in the other semi-final clash, in the winner-take-all finals on Sunday.

Mizuki Yanagita posted a game-high 23 points coming off 19 spikes, two kill blocks and a pair aces for the Japanese while captain Akari Oumi had 17 points, Sarina Koga scored 15 while Nami Sagawa chipped in 12 for Japan.

The Japanese side showed their superb floor defense and reception to crawl back from a 1-2 match deficit to force a decider. The NEC Red Rockets raced to a 10-3 lead in the fifth set and the Thais never recovered.

Vietnamese import Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hoa top scored for Bangkok Glass with 22 points, while Wilavan Apinyapong and skipper Pleumjit Thinkaow registered 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Bangkok Glass and Altay VC will battle it out in the third-place playoff.
