Tay Ninh, Vietnam, April 24, 2017 – Yunnan U.Dianchi College from China pulled off a dramatic 3-1 victory over VTV-Binhdien Long An to stay on course at the 11th VTV9-Binhdien Cup 2017 International Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Tay Ninh Gymnasium on Monday.
Yunnan utilised powerful attacks from Liu Hang Cheng and Liu Meng Ya and solid blocks by Pu Rou and Lei Yan Xi to brush off Vietnam’s VTV-Binhdien Long An 25-19 25-15 13-25 25-23 to lead Pool A with five points from two straight wins. Binhdien Long An also played well with Thai import Wilavan Apinyapong and veteran Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hoa at the helm, but still found the Chinese side uncatchable in the hard-fought four-set battle.
Earlier, Yunnan faced a stiff challenge from Thongtin Lienviet Postbank to beat the Vietnamese team in the hotly-contested five-set thriller 28-26 23-25 26-24 28-30 15-10 in their opening match on April 22, while VTV-Binhdien Long An tasted their first victory over Altay after brushing off the Kazakh side in straight sets 25-19 25-19 25-16 on the same day.
The other Pool A encounter saw Thongtin Lienviet Postbank thrash Altay in comfortable straight sets 25-19 25-11 25-18 on Monday. In Pool B, Fujian from China recovered from the first two-set loss to 4.25 Sport Club before beating the DPR Korea side in thrilling five sets 20-25 20-25 25-16 25-19 15-7 on Sunday and the 2015 Asian Club champions Bangkok Glass from Thailand, powered by star spiker Pleumjit Thinkaow, stunned title-holders Vietin Bank in dramatic four sets 26-24 19-25 25-20 25-22.
The annual tournament kicked off on April 22 in Tay Ninh, Vietnam, drawing eight teams including four overseas sides to vie for the top honour. Pool A comprised Thongtin Lienviet Postbank (Vietnam), VTV-Binhdien Long An (Vietnam), Altay (Kazakhstan) and Yunnan U. Dianchi College (China), with Fujian (China), Vietin Bank (Vietnam), Bangkok Glass (Thailand) and 4.25 Sport Club (DPR Korea) in Pool B.
The pool round-robin preliminaries are being held from April 22 to 27. Only top two teams from each pool will advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, April 29. The teams finishing third and fourth places in each pool will be relegated to the 5th-8th classification round.
On Tuesday (April 25), unbeaten Fujian are due to take on in-form Bangkok Glass and 4.25 Sport Club play Vietin Bank.
