CARRACHER VOTED ON TO EXECUTIVE OF AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE – Asian Volleyball Confederation

Sydney, Australia, May 6, 2017 – Volleyball Australia President, Craig Carracher, has been elected to the Executive Board of the Australian Olympic Committee in a tremendous boost for the sport.

Carracher, who has spent most of his life fighting for better recognition and support for both beach and indoor volleyball in Australia, was elected to the Executive by a vote of athletes and other sporting federations in Sydney on Saturday.

IOC vice-President, John Coates, was re-elected President of the AOC.

“I am extremely humbled to be elected to the Executive of the AOC, especially at this time of great challenge for sport in Australia,” Carracher said.

“With the battle for funding and participation getting tougher all the time, I am looking forward to bringing my experiences to the AOC.

“Volleyball has in many ways led the way, both as the world’s most gender-equal sport, and with developing a brand that has been attractive to sponsors, athletes and spectators.”

Carracher was first elected to the AOC Board to fill a casual vacancy in 2015, a position which was then re-endorsed at the 2016 AGM.

He has been working with volleyball in Australia for almost three decades, and attended his first AOC AGM in 1997.

Under Carracher, Australia has become a major player on the World Volleyball calendar, regularly hosting men’s World League and women’s Grand Prix events, and this year hosted two beach volleyball World Tour events.

He has also overseen dramatic improvement in Volleyball Australia’s financial situation, increasing turnover from $3m a year to $9m in the past financial year.

Carracher also holds senior positions with the Asian Volleyball Confederation and with the sport’s governing body, the FIVB.

“I look forward to working with the AOC staff, led by John Coates, Ian Chesterman and Helen Brownlee, and the new Board, together with Dr John Hewson and his team at the Foundation’s Investment Advisory Committee to prepare for the 2018 Winter Games and Tokyo 2020,” Carracher said.

“The AOC is evolving and I am confident that with enhanced engagement with our national sporting organisations the Olympic movement will continue to inspire generations of young Australians.”
