Ardabil, Iran, May 7, 2017 – Chinese Taipei pulled off a stunning 25-19, 29-27, 25-23 victory over China on Sunday to next set up a playoff rematch with unbeaten Japan in the semi-finals of the SMM 2nd Asian Men’s U23 Volleyball Championship at the 6,000-seater Rezazadeh Indoor Stadium.
Fired-up Chinese Taipei fared much better defensively and offensively in their quarter-final encounter against China to cruise past the formidable rivals in a closely-contested straight-set battle.
Chinese Taipei, which lost in straight sets to Japan in the playoff match at the round of the last eight teams on Friday, fielded a well-established line-up led by hard-hitting Lee Hsing-Kuo in a tough match against China. With the sensational win, Chinese Taipei are due to go up against Japan in the do-or-die semi-finals on Monday.
Chinese Taipei’s head coach Yu Ching-Fang said after the match: “The Chinese players are very tall and that’s why they made slow movement on court. Against Japan in the semi-finals, I think we will have a tough match. We lost to them once in this tournament. Therefore, we have to analyze them and try to get rid of our weak points. I think, we can beat them this time.”
