Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, May 15, 2017 – Hong Kong came from behind to beat Macao in gruelling five sets 20-25, 25-3, 25-16, 16-25, 15-9 to finish second in Pool A and join Thailand to the round of last eight teams at the SMM 2nd Asian Women’s U23 Volleyball Championship at The Mall Nakhon Ratchasima’s MCC Hall on Monday.

Macao started well to take the first set 25-20, but Hong Kong struck back to win the totally one-sided second set 25-3.

Hong Kong went on their good show to clinch the third set 25-16, but Macao were just never-say-die to hit back fearlessly for the fourth-set win 25-16. In the tie-breaker, Hong Kong performed much better with solid defence and good serves to take the fifth set 15-9.

Lou Ka Wai was the top scorer of Hong Kong with 13 points, while Pang Wing Lam added 10 points. Leong On Leng scored a match-high 19 points for Macao.

“It was not an easy game. We had a poor start. My players started nervously in the first set, while Macao did a very good job on service. Our service reception was also not good, so we could not perform well on our attacks. I told my players to keep cool and then they started to produce the goods,” Hong Kong’s head coach Cheung King Fai commented.

“I am very happy that my team finally won this match and advanced to the last eight teams. We will do our best in the next round,” he added.

With consecutive two losses, Macao have been relegated to the 9th and 11th classification round.
