Ardabil, Iran, May 8, 2017 – Pakistan struggled hard to beat Kazakhstan in hard-fought five-set thriller 25-20, 17-25, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14 on Monday to set up a rematch with China in the 5th-6th place playoff at the SMM 2nd Asian Men’s U23 Volleyball Championship at the 6,000-seater Rezazadeh Indoor Stadium.

Pakistan, which went down to China 1-3 in their playoff match at the round of the last eight teams on May 4, will fight for the fifth place against China on Tuesday.

“My players were too tired. I tried to push them to continue the fight. Kazakhstan also proved that they were not easy to beat and that’s why we had a close rival to go up point by point,” Pakistan’s head coach Mahmood Azhar said.

Pakistan fought for two hours with the spearheads of Muhammad Waseem, who, with his spectacular spikes, became a serious threat to the rivals’ defence line, while Gurin Kirill scored a match-high 16 points for Kazakhstan.
