Ardabil, Iran, May 4, 2017 – Sri Lanka produced a magnificent come-from-behind five-set (20-25, 16-25, 26-24, 28-26, 16-14) win over Uzbekistan at the SMM 2nd Asian Men’s U23 Volleyball Championship at the 6,000-seater Rezazadeh Indoor Stadium on Thursday.

Contesting the 9th-11th classification round in Pool H, Uzbekistan, teams finishing third in Pool B, took on Sri Lanka, third place in Pool D. Both sides suffered two straight losses in their respective pool at the round-robin preliminaries.

Sri Lanka had a dismal start in the first match against Uzbekistan on Day 4 which saw them go down in the first two sets 20-25, 16-25. With coach Hettiarachchige giving his players tip to play Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka found their touch to claim the next two sets 26-24, 28-26 for a 2-2 tie. The deciding set was more thrilling, with leads changing hands for several times. The Sri Lankans did better to win the closely-contested set 16-14 and match.

Sri Lanka were playing in the match against Uzbekistan without their libero Ranmuthu Harshaka Silva. They had only one libero who was sick since the very first match and could not help the team. However, Sri Lanka got used to the absence of the libero and found a way to get out of trouble. Sri Lanka are due to next play Australia on Friday.
