Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, May 13, 2017 – Vietnam, powered by 187cm-tall Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, bagged their first win at the SMM 2nd Asian Women’s U23 Volleyball Championship at The Mall Nakhon Ratchasima’s MCC Hall on Saturday following a comfortable straight-set 25-14, 25-17, 25-16 victory over Uzbekistan.
Vietnam, playing in Pool B with Uzbekistan and Japan, got off to a flying start as they quickly took the first two set 25-14, 25-17. Uzbekistan tried to regain their composure against the stronger rivals in the third set, but things turned sour for them as the Vietnamese went on their fine attacks to win the third set 25-16 and match.
Tran Thi Thanh Thuy topscored with 16 points for Vietnam. Duong Thi Hen and Dang Thi Kim Thanh added to the team’s tally with another 11 and 9 points respectively. Saida Allamova led Uzbekistan with 9 points.
“We don’t have enough preparation for this tournament as we trained only one week before coming here, but I am quite happy for my team’s victory today. We will next play Japan tomorrow (Sunday) and I think it will be a tough match. We will try our best,” Vietnam’s head coach Japanese Irisawa Hidehiro said after the match.
