Nam Dinh, Vietnam, June 30, 2017 – Terrific Matthew Aubrey’s 24 points including 19 kills from 43 attempts could not assist Australia’s Canberra Heat to beat Yan Chai Club as the Hong Kong side cruised past the Australian counterparts in exhausting five-setter 25-18 10-25 18-25 29-27 15-10 on the final day of the pool preliminaries of the SMM 2017 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship at the Nam Dinh Gymnasium on Friday.

Wong Pui Lam, Lee Man Sing and Kan Wai Kuen scored 14 points apiece for the Yan Chai’s first win in the top-flight competition against inexperienced Canberra Heat. Matthew Aubrey punctured the Yan Chai’s defence apart with his aggressive attacks and Jordan Power contributed 11 kills. The Australians also blocked solidly to win several key points including five each from Elliott Viles and James Weir. Aubrey also proved he is a talented player with all-round skills as the powerful attacker handed the team 4 kill blocks.

With the win, Yan Chai Club finished third in Pool C at the end of the pool preliminaries on Friday with one win against two losses, while winless Canberra Heat came in fourth place. However, both teams have already been relegated to the 9th-13th classification round.
