Canberra, Australia, July 13, 2017 – Australia has a perfect record after two matches in the Asian Volleyball Confederation World Championship qualifiers in Canberra, beating Thailand 3-0 at the AIS on Thursday night.
The Volleyroos were too strong from the start for the inexperienced Thai team, winning 25- 20, 25-21, 25-19.
But despite the result coach Mark Lebedew said there were still areas that needed improvement.
“It was important to win 3-0, but it was not quite as pretty tonight,” Lebedew said.
“We were a bit ragged and didn’t follow our plan perfectly, but it still seemed to serve us okay.
“One of our big focusses is to be precise, which covers a lot of areas. Tonight we weren’t as precise with our block and our communication – maybe we were already thinking ahead to the next match.”
Australia has a rest day on Friday before taking on Asian champions Japan on Saturday night.
Like Australia, Japan is yet to drop a set after two matches, beating New Zealand 3-0 on Thursday afternoon.
Co-captain Nathan Roberts said the team is building nicely.
“We started each set well and kept them at arm’s length,” Roberts said.
“There were a couple of tricky moments, but it was a good win. It’s great to have the home crowd behind us.”
The top two teams from this week’s five-country competition will qualify for next year’s FIVB Men’s World Championships, to be held in Italy and Bulgaria.
