Apeldoorn, Netherlands, July 8, 2017 – A stellar performance by Celeste Plak allowed the Netherlands to defeat Thailand 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-16) on Saturday. The Netherlands have now won all six of their World Grand Prix matches against Thailand.
Plak led all scorers with 17 points, while Robin de Kruijf added 11 points for Netherlands, including three blocks. Ajcharaporn Kongyot had 11 points for Thailand.
Netherlands top scorer Celeste Plak: “We played with good discipline today, according to the game plan we agreed. One of the main missions today was to watch the ball instead of the player, when we were blocking. We were fooled by Thailand a few times, but most of the times we did well. Because we served well, we made it easier for ourselves. At the end of the match we made a few unnecessary mistakes, but in the end, we kept our cool and finished it off.”
Netherlands coach Jamie Morrison: “We’ve been working very hard in the last couple of weeks in the gym, and all that hard work is paying off. Today was a good example of that. I think we’re going to keep improving every match in this World Grand Prix.”
Thailand coach Danai Sriwacharamaytakul: “I am satisfied with my team’s performance in some parts of the match, when we succeeded to catch up with our rivals. Our reception was too poor today, and as a result of that we had troubles passing the strong Dutch block.”
Thailand captain Thinkaow Pleumjit: “The Dutch players are very tall and strong, and we couldn’t stop them enough today, especially their counterattack. The fans today in Apeldoorn were amazing. A lot of Thai people living in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany came here to cheer for us, and we really appreciate this.”
