Beijing, 17 July 2017 – The first stop of FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F°’s visit to China was to meet with the Chinese Volleyball Association (CVA) and discuss plans for future events and tournaments in China.
After successfully hosting both the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, as well as a number of FIVB ranking events this year, the infrastructure is in place for China to play a central role in the future of volleyball and beach volleyball. While support for volleyball across China continues to grow, there is a particular enthusiasm in the city of Nanjing. The FIVB U21 Beach Volleyball World Championships concluded there last week, and next month the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Group 1 finals will also be staged in the Jiangsu province’s capital.
After successful talks, President Graça spoke of the unified goals shared between the FIVB and CVA.
“It is fantastic that the FIVB is able to bring so many wonderful tournaments to the fans in China. Both organisations are working hard to help grow the sport across the world and we have seen incredible performances from the Chinese national teams in recent years, including the women’s indoor team who won gold at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The quality of play, coaching and infrastructure will ensure volleyball in China continues to develop.”
In addition, CVA Vice President and Secretary General Mr Xu Li said that he was appreciative of the continued FIVB support, and reiterated China’s desire for increased hosting opportunities and continued expansion of the sport in China.
After the meeting, President Graça and FIVB delegates were given a tour of the national training centre where Argentinian coach Raul Lozano is currently training the men’s volleyball team. Following the success of coach Lang Ping and the women’s side, Lozano and the CVA are hopeful that the men’s team can replicate the same, positive results and improve on the fifth place finish they achieved in this year’s FIVB Volleyball World League Group 2.
