Surabaya, Indonesia, July 26, 2017 – Formidable Iran, spearheaded by powerful left-hander Amin Esmaeilnejad, stormed past Chinese Taipei in thrilling three-setter 25-20 30-28 25-21 to capture the Pool B top spot as expected at the SMM 19th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Wahana Ekspresi Poesponegoro Gymnasium on Wednesday.

Amin Esmaeilnejad remained the top scorer of Iran, fielding a young, strong squad preparing for the next month’s Men’s U23 World Championship in Cairo, Egypt. Esmaeilnejad scored a team-high 14 points including 10 kills from 23 attempts.

“I think we played a good match against a strong team like Chinese Taipei. Winning 3-0 is very important for us and we will try to keep winning in our next matches. We next play China, one of the strongest teams in Asia with an excellent coach Raul Lozano, and Australia, the team which have already qualified for the World Championship. Both teams are of course strong for our teams to be reckoned with. For us, it’s important to gain competition experience ahead of the Men’s U23 World Championship. The key point of our success is that we attacked and served well,” Iran’s Argentine head coach Juan Manuel Cichello commented after the match.

Asked who in his opinion was the best player in this match against Chinese Taipei, Chichello said, “I like the team, I don’t mention the players. If they don’t play as a team, we can’t accomplish the team’s target of winning.”
