Hong Kong, July 23, 2017 – Japan outplayed Russia 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-10) in a thrilling five setter fighting back from a 2-0 deficit
Top scorer of the games was Russia’s Irina Voronkova with 21 points followed by her teammate Anna Lazareva with 19 markers while Sarina Koga produced team high 17 points for Japan.
Japan coach Kumi Nakada: I would like to thank Hong Kong’s audience for their support and encouragement. Our team has encountered very strong opponents in three consecutive days with tough moments. These are valuable nutrients for the development of our team. I am happy with the result.
Japan captain Nana Iwasaka: It was not easy to play through the five sets. Our team gained confidence for the upcoming events. Russia team are very tall and powerful. We are happy to win. Besides, I would especially like to give thanks to the Hong Kong’s audience for their support and we will continue to work hard.
Russia coach Vladimir Kuziutkin: First of all, I would like to congratulate Japan for their victory and their ticket to the final six and I wish them successful in the final. It was a good match. We were able to win the earlier sets with good scores. However, we were not able to win due to inexperienced players.
Russia captain Irina Zaryazhko: It was an interesting but difficult match. I am sad that our team did not win.
