Ruse, Bulgaria, July 8, 2017 – A phenomenal all-round performance by middle blocker Hristina Ruseva carried hosts Bulgaria to another victory at their home FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix 2017 Group 2 tournament. The Lionesses thrilled the enthusiastic spectators in Ruse with a 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 25-14, 22-25, 15-8) victory over Korea in the first ever World Grand Prix encounter between these two nations.
Ruseva made four aces and four kill blocks for a total of 17 points and shared the best scorer honours with her teammate Dobriana Rabadzhieva and Korea’s Jeongah Park. The other Bulgarian middle blocker Nasya Dimitrova scored 16 times, while Korea’s big star and captain Yeon Koung Kim finished with 14.
Yeon Koung Kim, captain of Korea: “Today Bulgaria played really well. They had good blocking and good defence. Some of our players are really young and in the tie-breaker they were a little bit nervous. So we did not do the right things and we lost. I hope tomorrow we will play better than today, with fewer mistakes, and I will be happy if we win.”
Petya Barakova, player of Bulgaria: “We played like a team today and we showed that we are capable of winning against this strong opponent. The fans were absolutely incredible today and they helped us a lot to achieve this good result. The match tomorrow will not be easy, but I hope to win again for our fans.”
