Sendai, Japan, July 15, 2017 – Thailand took a win over Brazil 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 29-27) to claim first ever victory over this opposition in 13 World Grand Prix matches.
Thailand’s Pleumjit Thinkaow and Ajcharaporn Kongyot took centre stage scoring match high 10 points each while Drussyla Costa dominated the charts on Brazil’s side with 4 points scored.
Thailand player Ajcharaporn Kongyot: I’m really happy to win today. It was such a tough match and we tried to avoid making simple mistakes. Our veteran players led us younger players really well, and I think that was great.
Thailand coach Danai Sriwacharamaytakul: The best thing about today was that we played as we planned maximizing the particular skills of each player. Brazil has such a high block and they’re strong, and they can play quickly. So it was tough to get every point against them. They made some service errors today, and that gave us a chance to play our games, to play our combinations. And I think we played as a team, together, and the result was a good game.
Brazil captain Natália Pereira: I want to say Thailand played wonderful volleyball today, and I want to congratulate them on their win. We tended to be a bit passive today, lacking in concentration at times. Their playing style is very different from us, and we didn’t adjust very well. We play Japan tomorrow in a very important match, so we need to emotionally adjust and make sure we’re ready for that.
Brazil coach José Guimarães: Our team made many mistakes today, and we weren’t very careful in some points of the the game. We tried to serve aggressively, and not let them get into their style of volleyball. But we just couldn’t stop them, because their setter is really skilled. We need to come together as a team if we hope to do our best tomorrow.
