Surabaya, Indonesia, July 27, 2017 – Sri Lanka caused a major upset at their first 9th-16th playoff encounter against Qatar after pulling off a hard-fought five-set win over formidable rivals at the SMM 19th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gymnasium on Thursday.
Qatar, fourth place at the previous Asian meet in Tehran, Iran two years ago and 7th at the FIVB World League Group 3 this season, succumbed to their first 2-3 defeat at the hands of hosts Indonesia on Wednesday. The disappointing loss relegated the Qataris to the 9th-16th classification instead.
Sri Lanka, seeking for their first win in the tournament after going down in straight sets to Japan and Korea and 2-3 to Vietnam in their preliminary round Pool C, came from behind to beat Qatar 19-25 26-24 25-20 23-25 15-12 to add another agony to Qatar’s same wounds.
Subasingha led Sri Lanka with 17 points including 16 kills from 41 attempts. Gonaragamage added 12 kills, 2 block and one ace. Bella Abunabot topscored with 16 points for Qatar.
