Surabaya, Indonesia, July 26, 2017 – Vietnam overcame a strong challenge from Sri Lanka to see off the rivals in exhausting five sets 25-19 16-25 25-21 20-25 15-9 for their first win at the SMM 19th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Wahana Ekspresi Poesponegoro Gymnasium on Wednesday.

Hoang Van Phuong topscored with 17 points for Vietnam including 16 attacks from 28 attempts and Tu Thanh Thuan contributed 14 kills. Subasingha led Sri Lanka with 16 points from 12 kills, 3 blocks and one ace serve.

“I’m very happy that we won today. My players did a good job in service and attacks. Sri Lanka are also strong with good blocks. Their players have been playing together for a long time. My team are preparing for the South East Asian Games in Malaysia. Win or loss here does not matter. What we need is to allow our team to get more experience ahead of the SEA Games,” Vietnam’s assistant coach Le Hong Hao commented after the match.
