Manila, Philippines, August 9, 2017 – Secretary of Foreign Affairs Mr Alan Peter S. Cayetano was guest of honour during the Opening Ceremony of the SMM 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship, which is taking place simultaneously at the Alonte Sports Arena and the Muntinlupa Sports Complex from August 9 to 17.
Upon his arrival at the Alonte Sports Arena on Wednesday, he received a warm welcome from the Control Committee members led by CC Chairman Mr Wei Jizhong, the FIVB and AVC Honorary Life President, and Technical Delegate Mr Shanrit Wongprasert, himself the AVC Secretary-General, and the local organisers.
Walking past a large crowd of home audience, Mr Alan Peter S. Cayetano waved to the spectators at the grandstands, taking selfies with Philippine volleyball fans inside the hall and was all smiles.
In the ceremony, Mr Wei Jizhong said on behalf of AVC President Dr Saleh A. Bin Nasser that he was showered with honours that Secretary of Foreign Affairs Mr Alan Peter Cayetano presided over the Opening Ceremony and he would like to thank Binan City and the Philippines alike to make an excellent preparation for the SMM 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship. He also thanked all 14 participating teams to join the fray, sponsors and supporters and wish the top-flight tournament a great success.
Mr Wei Jizhong presented an AVC Plaque to Mr Alan Peter S. Cayetano before key persons including Mr Wei Jizhong, Mayor of Binan City, Mr Alan Peter S. Cayetano and AVC Development and Marketing Committee Chairman Mr Ramon Suzara, Director General in the Organising Committee, jointly touched a volleyball to mark an official sign of the Opening Ceremony, reflecting unity and success of the players and the organises.
Co-Chairman of the Organising Committee Mr Jose Romasanta, himself the president of the Philippine Volleyball Federation, declared the tournament open and those bearing the national flags of all 14 participating teams paraded out of the competition venue.
After that, all the high-ranked officials were seated at the grandstands to watch the curtain-raisers of the championship between hosts the Philippines and Hong Kong.
