Manila, Philippines, August 14, 2017 – Australia claimed the top spot of Pool G after eking out a 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 win over Iran in their 9th-14th playoff encounter of the SMM 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship here.

Four Aussie spikers finished in double digit to secure their second win of the tournament – a fitting follow-up on their dominant victory over Maldives the day before.

After a shaky opening frame, Jennifer Sadler joined forces with Rebecca Reeve as they combined for 30 big points to take the ensuing sets and survive Iran’s gallant stand.

“We attacked very well today and we didn’t let the difficult passes affect our game, we kept our service aggression game so we didn’t notice the passing as much, so it was good,” said Australia head coach Shannon Winzer moments after their game held at Muntinlupa Sports Complex.

Aside from their offense, Sophie Godfrey established her presence in defense anew as she scored 4 blocks of her 14 points while setter Sophie Paine ran 29 excellent plays en route to the win.

Mahsa Saberi had 17 points in a losing effort for Iran, which need to wait for the top team of Pool H for the crossover semi-finals in hope to get a higher rank in the tournament after crashing out of the Top 8.
