Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 21, 2017 – Hosts Malaysia tasted their first victory at the 29th South East Asian Games Men’s Volleyball Championship at the MITEC Hall 11 by brushing off Cambodia in straight sets 25-18 30-28 25-17 in their opening match on Monday.

Sim Jian Qin, who was ruled out of the pre-SEA Games volleyball competition with an ankle injury at the MBSA Indoor Volleyball Hall in Shah Alam in July, proved that he is in the pink physically and mentally after leading the host side with an impressive 22 points from 19 attack hits and 3 aces. Ranjit Ramu added 15 points from his powerful attacks. Sophea Chuk led Cambodia with 9 points, all from his attacks.

Malaysia are looking forward to their first top-three finish in 16 years. The Malaysians claimed silver medal in 2001, their first ever medal achieved in the SEA Games, on home soil in Kuala Lumpur. Since then, Malaysia have never finished top three at the victory podium.
