Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 24, 2017 – Indonesia ended their pool preliminaries with a bang after stunning Vietnam in straight sets 26-24 25-20 25-20 to capture the top spot in Pool B and a semi-final berth at the 29th South East Asian Games Men’s Volleyball Championship at the MITEC Hall 11 on Thursday.
Indonesia, fourth place at the recent Asian Senior Men’s Championship at home in Surabaya last month, have already beaten Timor Leste 3-0 and the Philippines 3-1 to play Vietnam, silver medallists at the previous SEA Games in Singapore two years ago, in their last round-robin preliminary encounter to decide the Pool B winners. Vietnam also did likewise for straight two wins, 3-0 win against the Philippines and the same margin in the second match against Timor Leste.
Both sides played well in the first set, but the Indonesians played more confidently and consistently to take the hotly-contested set 26-24. The following two sets were dominated by Indonesia, spearheaded by ace spikers Rivan Nurmulki and Rendy Febriant Tamamilang, Indonesia won both sets 25-20 25-20 and match.
With straight three wins including the Thursday’s convincing 3-0 against Vietnam, Indonesia topped Pool B as expected, leaving the Vietnamese side in second position in the pool. In the Saturday’s semi-finals, Indonesia will take on Pool A runners-up, to be decided on Friday between Myanmar and Malaysia. Vietnam will go up against Pool A winners Thailand in the other semi-final clash.
