Manila, Philippines, August 11, 2017 – A much taller Kazakhstan team denied the Philippines 25-23, 25-20, 25-19 to top Pool A in the SMM 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship on Friday at Alonte Sports Arena here.
Katerina Tatko finished with 20 points to lead the attack for the Kazakhs, who finished the pool stage with a 2-0 win-loss record and will face Vietnam in the top eight playoff match on Sunday.
Alyssa Valdez tallied 14 points for the Philippines, while Jaja Santiago had 13 markers. Despite the loss, the Philippines have already secured a spot in the quarter-finals and will face Korea in the other top eight playoff encounter.
Both Kazakhstan and the Philippines are already assure of booking their berths to the next year’s AVC Cup for Women.
“It was a tough game against hosts Philippines. They had home fans who cheered them all the way. Two of their players, Santiago Alyja Daphne and Valdez Alyssa, attacked very well against our blockers. We just tried to hold our nerves and play our game. We next take on Vietnam and Korea and are expected to face uphill tasks. We will train harder and watch the rivals’ video to read their tactics,” Kazakhstan head coach Shapran Vyacheslav commented after the match.
