Manila, Philippines, August 10, 2017 – Kazakhstan brushed off underdogs Hong Kong in straight sets 25-16 25-17 25-11 not only to taste their first win at the SMM 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship but also advance to the round of the last eight teams in the top-flight competition at the Alonte Sports Arena on Thursday.

Katerina Tatko led the charge for Kazakhstan as she attacked well for 11 kills from 28 attempts in the match which saw the smaller-built rivals succumb to their fightback efforts. The much taller Kazakhs, whose height average is 181cm against Hong Kong’s 172cm, took the height advantage to attack effectively and block solidly for the comfortable straight-set win.

Katerina Tatko scored a team-high 14 points from 11 kills and 3 aces. Yana Petrenko contributed 10 kills and Antonina Rubtsova 3 blocks, while Fung Wing Yan led Hong Kong with 8 points.

With only three teams competing in Pool A, the Philippines had already beaten Hong Kong and therefore, the losing team played a must-win match against Kazakhstan on Thursday to keep their hopes of advancing alive. However, suffering straight two losses, Hong Kong were relegated to the 9th-14th classification. In their last preliminary Pool A encounter on Friday, Kazakhstan and the Philippines will battle it out for the top spot in Pool A despite the fact that both sides have already booked their berths heading the round of the last eight teams.
