Funafati,Tuvalu, August 3, 2017 – The first National Referee Course which began on July 26 in Funafati came to a successful conclusion on Monday, July 31, with the participation of 15 referees.
The five-day course was conducted by FIVB Instructor Mr. Dean Turner, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), during the Tuvalu national competition, while the practical testing was executed during the competition phase.
With no indoor venue available in Tuvalu, the practical session was conducted outdoor where the referees showed good adaptation to the wind and sun conditions impacting on the matches.
There were only two accommodation venues in Tuvalu and the Filamona Guesthouse was sufficient for the instructor’s purpose of hosting this course.
Due to religious reasons, the course delivery was pushed into four and a half-day and there was no activity on Saturday and Sunday on the island.
The Tuvalu National Federation and National Olympic Committee was congratulated for achieving a good result to support the application for Olympic Solidarity funding.
Mr. Melei Melei was the instructor on using the FIVB referee database. This included providing information on the username and password to access the database.
Bad weather on the final day prevented several candidates from undertaking the final theory exam, therefore they were not passed. The final exam was provided to the Course Coordinator, Mr. Melei Melei, who helped administer the test and provide responses to Mr. Dean at a later time.
All other attending participants in the course were rated Sufficient or Better and therefore all candidates were passed and registered to the FIVB database.
Course Instructor Dean Turner thanked the participants for their discipline, commitment and dedication.
“I would personally like to thank Mr. Melei for his kind assistance and attention to me while staying in Tuvalu. His support and effort made the stay and course very enjoyable.
“I wish the new referee graduates well and congratulate them all for taking time away from their jobs and families to attend this course,” he said.
