Ardabil, Iran, August 10, 2017 – Qatar got their 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Asian Qualifier Pool A campaign off to a brilliant start with a magnificent comeback 3-2 (21-25 15-25 25-21 25-18 15-13) win over Korea at the 6,000-seater Rezazadeh Gymnasium on Thursday.
The five-day tournament, which is being held from August 10 to 14, served as the Asian qualification round, where only top two out of five participating teams will make the cut for the next year’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Bulgaria & Italy between September 10 and 30.
In the first two sets, Korea, fresh from claiming bronze at the recent Asian Senior Men’s Championship in Surabaya, Indonesia, put in their splendid form with effective blocks and sharp attacks to win 25-21 and 25-15. Qatar came back in the third set and the tactics change made by Italian head coach of Qatar brought back hope to the team supported by the powerful attacks of Ratmt Wadidie.
Kim Hochul who took over the team since 2006 made five substitutions but it did not pay off and finally Qatar captured the remaining three sets 25-21 25-18 15-13 and match.
“We did what we had to but the match was tough,” said Kim Hochul, head coach of Korea, while Qatar’s head coach Mr. Giaccardi believed that the first step was taken good and expressed his satisfaction that his team beat Korea for the first time.
