Ardabil, Iran, August 12, 2017 – Qatar pulled off an upset 25-21, 25-17, 25-18 win against Kazakhstan at the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Asian Qualifier Pool A at the 6,000-seater Rezazadeh Stadium on Saturday.

Kazakhstan, fresh from winning silver medal at the SMM 19th Asian Senior Men’s Championship in Surabaya, Indonesia last week, are likely to shatter their dreams of securing their place at the World Championship Finals in Italy and Bulgaria next year.

Qatar has already recorded two wins from three matches contested and therefore, keep their hopes of qualifying for the Finals alive. Qatar will rest on Sunday and will be pitted against hosts Iran on August 14, the final day of the tournament.

Starting off the match with efficiency, Qatar stormed to a big lead in the beginning of the first set. Powerful spikes form Raimi and Ilija gave Kazakhstan difficulties to return. Although Kazakh Erdshtein stood out and gained points by points through his driving attacks, Qatar clinched the first set 25-21.

The Qataris further improved on their defense and attacks. Their destructive serves and airtight blocks made it more and more difficulties for Kazakhstan to sneak points. Qatar clinched the second and third sets 25-17 25-18 and match.
