Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 23, 2017 – Vietnam, powered by a hard-hitting trio of Doan Thi Xuan, Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and Ha Ngoc Diem, thrashed hosts Malaysia in comfortable straight sets 25-17 25-7 25-11 to register their first win at the 29th South East Asian Games Women’s Volleyball Championship at the MITEC Hall 11 on Wednesday.
Vietnam, fifth place at the last week’s Asian Senior Women’s Championship in Manila, Philippines and runners-up at the previous Games in Singapore two years ago, overcame their poor start in the first set, where they struggled to hit form, allowing the Malaysians, boosted by home crowds’ supports, several attacking opportunities. However, the Vietnamese found their rhythm and started to produce the goods shortly after that to take the opening set 25-17.
With Ha Ngoc Diem and tall Tran Thi Thanh Thuy attacking aggressively at the net, Vietnam turned up heat on the rivals and played more comfortably. The Vietnamese side captured the next two sets 25-7 25-11 to claim their first win in the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
Down Thi Xuan, Ha Ngoc Diem and Tran Thi Thanh Thuy had the similar 8 attacks, but Doan Thi Xuan led Vietnam with 14 points including 3 blocks and 3 aces. Tran Thi Thanh Thuy had 4 stuff blocks and Le Thanh Thuy won 3 points apiece in blocking and serving efforts.
Low Mei Cing was the only player in Malaysia to score double digits after collecting12 points, all through her powerful attacks.
