Tehran, Iran – January 23, 2018 – Iran head coach Igor Kolakovic is set to form two sets of national team players to face the enhanced challenges ahead in 2018.
Iran’s main focus is the Italy/Bulgaria 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, and the chance to build on their quarter-final finish from the Poland 2014 World Championship.
They have also been included among the 12 core teams for the inaugural Volleyball Nations League, and will try to defend their Asian Games gold medal at the Jakarta Palembang 2018 Asian Games.
It means that their calendar is quickly filling up, and as such Kolakovic is likely to promote members of their successful age-grade teams to the senior squad.
“The team composition is not yet decided,” Kolakovic said. “I did not have enough time last year to add some more young players mostly because they were all busy with their own age-group tournaments, so I will do my best to include them.”
Iran’s recent rise continued in 2017, notably when they won bronze at the 2017 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup. The U19 side then won the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U19 World Championship to show that there are a host of young players with the potential to feature for the senior team in years to come.
“No-one is guaranteed a place on the podium,” Kolakovic said. “We will try our best, but even the best teams in the world like Brazil are not guaranteed a medal in advance.
“All I know that Iran features one unique quality, and that is the desire to sacrifice themselves for their national flag. They fight for their country.”
