Gold Coast, Australia, February 21, 2018 – The men’s teams of New Zealand and Cyprus are the lucky ones – the first-ever athletes to participate in an official beach volleyball match at the Commonwealth Games. This became clear as the schedule for beach volleyball’s debut at the quadrennial multi-sport event in Australia’s Gold Coast was released.
The beach volleyball competition at GC2018 will take place from April 6 through 12 at a 4000-spectator venue on the Coolangatta Beachfront in Gold Coast’s southernmost suburb.
For the first phase of the tournament in each gender, the twelve participating teams are split into three round-robin pools of four. The total of 36 pool stage matches will be played over four days with nine matches per day, the first one starting at 10:30 and the last one at 21:30 local time.
The pool winners and the pool runners-up, along with the two best-ranked third-placed teams from each gender will qualify for the quarterfinals to be played on April 10, following a drawing of lots.
The four semifinal games are set to take place on April 11 and the grand finale when all the medallists will become known is on Thursday, April 12. The men’s gold medal match is scheduled for 16:30 and the two best women’s pairs will battle for the historic title at 20:30. The respective bronze medal matches will start an hour earlier – at 15:30 and at 19:30.
“It is an exciting day for all the competing nations and beach volleyball fans around the world to learn the full match schedule for GC2018,” Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President Louise Martin CBE said. “We are proud to see beach volleyball being contested at the Commonwealth Games for the first time in history at GC2018 – this is another great milestone. It is also extremely pleasing to see such strong diversity and representation from all regions of the Commonwealth, with teams from Oceania, North America, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean taking part in beach volleyball.”
