Bangkok, Thailand, April 20, 2018 – Australians Phoebe Bell/Jessyka Ngauamo and Kazakhs Tatyana Mashkova/Irina Tsimbalova, silver medallists at the recent double-gender, one-star FIVB World Tour Pak Bara Beach Satun, have been awarded the top two seeds in the AVC Women’s Beach Volleyball Tour 2018 Vietnam Can Tho Open, which will be held from April 20 to 23.
A total of 18 teams confirmed their participation in the three-day event comprising two teams apiece from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Kazakhstan, Singapore and Thailand, one team each from Indonesia, Malaysia and New Zealand, with hosts Vietnam fielding three teams.
Australia 1’s Phoebe/Ngauamo, fourth place at the last week’s AVC Beach Tour “19th Samila Open” in Songkhla, Thailand, are the top seeds to lead the charge in Pool A together with Hong Kong 1, Japan 2, Vietnam 3 and Thailand 2. Second seeds Mashkova/Tsimbalova are in Pool B with Australia 2, Hong Kong 2, Vietnam 2 and Thailand 1. New Zealand’s Julia Tilley/Alice Bain are third seeds in Pool C with Indonesians Desi Ratnasari/Eka Yokebed, Singapore 1 and Kazakhstan 2. Pool D consists of fourth seeds Japan 1’s Takemi Nishibori/Ayumi Kusano, Vietnam 1, Malaysia and Singapore 2.
All teams will battle it out in the pool round-robin preliminaries to seek chances of qualifying as the top two teams from each pool to the quarter-finals, where drawing of lots will be conducted at the court for the single elimination.
The first match of the tournament will kick off at 8.30am local time on Friday, April 20, 2018, with Australia 2’s Brittany Kendall/Stefanie Weiler opening their campaign against Thailand 1’s Sirinuch Kawfong/Anchara Changkham on Court 1 and Hong Kong 1’s Yuen Ting Chi/Au Yeung Wai Yan against Thailand 2’s Chaninporn Muenphad/Thitika Simuang on Court 2.
All participating teams have been requested to attend the opening ceremony at 7pm on Friday. The pool plays will be held from Friday to Sunday, with the quarter-finals taking place in the Sunday evening (6pm onwards). Semi-finals will be held on Monday morning, April 23, followed respectively by the bronze-medal match, the final showdown, closing and awards presentation.
