Can Tho, Vietnam, April 22, 2018 – Berths in the semi-finals have already been secured on Sunday as the 2018 AVC Women’s Beach Volleyball Tour Vietnam Can Tho Open enters the final day of the single-gender competition, with Kazakh second seeds Tatyana Mashkova/Irina Tsimbalova challenging Japanese Takemi Nishibori/Ayumi Kusano and Indonesians Eka Yokebed/Desi Ratnasari going up against Thais Anchara Changkham/Sirinuch Kawfong in the Monday morning’s do-or-die battle.
Only top two teams from each pool make the cut for the afternoon quarter-finals on Sunday, the final day of the pool round-robin preliminaries.
Thailand 2’s Chaninporn Muenphad/Thitika Simuang made a clean sweep in Pool A to score 8 points from 4 wins, followed by Japan 2’s Reika Murakami/Chiyo Suzuki with 7 points from 3 wins against one loss.
Kazakhstan’s Mashkova/Tsimbalova, silver medallists at the recent FIVB double-gender, one-star World Tour Pak Bara Beach Satun, Thailand, captured the top spot in Pool B with 8 points from 4 wins, while Thailand 1’s Anchara/Sirinuch finished second place with just one point behind from 3 wins against one loss.
In Pool C, Eka Yokebed/Desi Ratnasari emerged as the pool winners. The Indonesians were in awesome form by not losing a set to their respective rivals to bag 6 points from three wins in a row. New Zealand’s Julia Tilley/Alice Bain came in second place with 5 points from 2 wins against 1 loss.
As expected, Japan 1’s Takemi Nishibori/Ayumi Kusano and Vietnam 1’s Truong Duang Thi My Huyen/Nguyen Thi Cam Tien made a one-two finish in Pool D, with the former leading the pool from start to finish to collect 6 points from three straight wins and the latter in second place with just one point behind from 2 wins against one loss.
In the afternoon quarter-finals, a drawing of lots was held to decide the match schedule in the single elimination.
Mashkova/Tsimbalova completely dashed the lone hope of the host nation by thrashing Vietnam 1’s Tien/Truong 21-10 21-8 in just 22 minutes. Tien/Truong were the only host team to survive an early exit and qualify for the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, they had already crashed out from the competition at the hands of the formidable Kazakh duo.
Japan 2’s Murakami/Suzuki mounted a strong challenge against Yokebed/Desi, but found the Indonesians an impossible nut to crack to eventually go down 21-12 17-21 13-15, while Japan 1’s Takemi/Ayumi proved too strong for Tilley/Bain to beat the Kiwis 21-8 21-17. Anchara/Sirinuch downed Chaninporn Muenphad/Thitika Simuang 21-16 21-10 in the all-Thais battle to advance to the semi-finals.
The Monday morning’s semi-final encounters see Kazakhstan 1’s Mashkova/Tsimbalova play Japan 1’s Takemi/Ayumi and Indonesians Yokebed/Desi test their mettle against Thailand 1’s Anchara/Sirinuch. The two winning teams from the semi-finals will set up a final showdown, with the two losers battling it out in the third-place playoff.
