Dhaka, Bangladesh, April 24, 2018 – Kyrgyzstan defied against all odds to overpower Uzbekistan in hard-fought five-set thriller to join hosts Bangladesh, Nepal and Turkmenistan in the semi-finals of the Bangabandhu Asian Senior Men’s Central Zone Volleyball Championship 2018 at the Shaheed Suhrawardy National Indoor Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka on Tuesday.
Bangladesh captured the top spot in Pool A with 6 points from 2 wins against no loss, followed by Nepal with 3 points from one win against one loss. Both Bangladesh and Nepal advanced to the Wednesday’s semi-finals, while Maldives lost twice in the pool round-robin preliminaries to crash out from the competition.
In Pool B, Turkmenistan became the first team to enter the semi-finals since Monday following their two straight victories with aggregate 6 points. Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan battled it out for the remaining vacancy to the semi-finals.
Against Uzbekistan on Tuesday, Kyrgyzstan took the first set without much trouble 25-18, but failed to make the grade in the next two sets to go down 24-26 19-25. Kyrgyzstan upped their tempo and hit back aggressively to grab the remaining two sets 25-18 15-13 for the match and a place in the semi-finals.
On Wednesday, Turkmenistan will next go up against Nepal, with hosts Bangladesh taking on Kyrgyzstan. The two winning teams will advance to the Friday’s final showdown, while the two losers will battle it out in the third-place playoff on the same day. Thursday is the rest day.
