Songkhla, Thailand, April 13, 2018 – Thai beach volleyball players, preparing for their campaign at the SMM AVC Beach Volleyball Tour “19th Samila Open” at the Samila Beach in Songkhla from April 14 to 17, 2018, as well as officials from Thailand Volleyball Association and Media representatives joined the water-splashing Songkran Festival at the BP Samila Beach Hotel on Friday.

After their return from the entertaining “water battle,” in which they joined the fun-packed Songkran Festival procession in downtown Songkhla to splash water on one another, TVA officials and Media representatives joined the “Rod-Nam-Dam-Hua” ceremony (pouring scented water on the hands of the revered elders) of the Thailand Volleyball Association led by TVA President Mr Somporn Chaibangyang and AVC Secretary-General Mr Shanrit Wongpraser. Also in attendance in the ceremony as one of the three elders was senior volleyball reporter Mr Thanandorn Praparphan.

Songkran Festival, is widely known as the Thai Traditional New Year’s Day, which falls during April 13 and 15 every year. Most of the people splash the water on each other, but the Songkran tradition is an important custom for Thai families, communities and religion.

To start the ceremony, the players, TVA officials and Media representatives lined up before the revered three elders, expressing their respects to them by pouring scented water onto their hands, softly holding fresh jasmine garlands. The scented water containing leaves of colourful roses flew through their hands and perfume garlands before falling into the flower tray with pedestal.

The three elders in turn wished the Thai beach volleyball players, TVA officials and Media representatives good luck and prosperity. After that, Mr Shanrit, on behalf of the revered elders, said, “Wishing TVA President Mr Somporn and Senior Reporter Mr Thanandorn good times, good health, peace and joy in this Songkran Day. May this Songkran also bring you all inspiration and happiness to you and your family. I wish all the Thai beach volleyball players successes in the Samila Open and your future tournaments,” said Mr Shanrit.
