Dhaka, Bangladesh, April 23, 2018 – Turkmenistan bagged their second win in the Bangabandhu Asian Senior Men’s Central Zone Volleyball Championship after brushing off Uzbekistan in a closely-contested 3-1 encounter before a large number of local enthusiasts at the Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium in Dhaka on Monday.
On the previous day, in-form Turkmenistan pulled off a hard-fought 3-0 victory over fighting Kyrgyzstan and remained unbeaten on Monday following their dramatic 3-1 (25-18 26-28 25-22 25-18) win over Uzbekistan.
The two straight wins put Turkmenistan on top of Pool B with 6 points, while Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan suffered one loss apiece to Turkmenistan and have to confront each other on Tuesday to vie for the vacant second team in the pool to make the cut for the Wednesday’s semi-finals.
Bangladesh also proved their talents by making a clean sweep in Pool A. The host side came back to beat Nepal 3-1 in the curtain-raisers on Saturday and continued their remarkable form on Monday by thrashing Maldives in straight sets 25-15 25-15 25-22. The two successive wins also helped Bangladesh clinch the top spot in Pool A for a place in the semi-finals.
Nepal, though beaten by the hosts in the opening match, made amends by outclassing underdogs Maldives in straight sets 25-21 25-18 25-15 on Sunday to finish second in Pool A and join hosts Bangladesh in the semi-finals.
Only one match will be contested on Tuesday, with Kyrgyzstan taking on Uzbekistan to decide the second team in Pool B for the Wednesday’s semi-finals.
The championship is being held between April 21 to 27, 2018. On Monday, both matches were also on Livestream via facebook.com/dhakalive.tv to allow internet viewers chances of watching the matches live, a crucial way to promote the volleyball competition in Bangladesh.
