Dhaka, Bangladesh, April 26, 2018 – Uzbekistan finished fifth place at the Bangabandhu Asian Senior Men’s Central Zone Championship after thrashing underdogs Maldives in straight sets 25-21 25-17 25-20 in the playoff at the Shaheed Suhrawardy National Indoor Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka on Thursday.

Uzbekistan contested the six-team competition by joining Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan in Pool B with Nepal, Maldives and hosts Bangladesh in Pool A.

Uzbekistan got the tournament off to a sluggish start with a 1-3 loss to Turkmenistan before narrowly going down 2-3 to Kyrgyzstan in their second encounter. Two successive losses relegated Uzbekistan to the classification 5th-6th round, smashing their dreams of making it to the semi-finals.

In the 5th-6th place playoff on Thursday, Uzbekistan proved their class as they played much better than Maldives to brush off the less-ranked opponents in comfortable straight sets.

On Friday, the final day of the one-week championship, Nepal and Kyrgyzstan battle it out in the third-place playoff at 10.30am local time, while Turkmenistan set up the final showdown with hosts Bangladesh at 3pm. The awards presentation and closing ceremony will be held shortly after the end of the final match.
