FUJIAN JOIN HOSTS BINH DIEN LONG AN IN SEMI-FINALS OF VTV9 BINH DIEN CUP
Quang Nam, Vietnam, May 16, 2018 – China’s Fujian came back to beat Est Cola from Thailand 3-1 to secure a semi-final berth in the 12th VTV9 Binh Dien Cup International Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Tamky Gym in Quang Nam on Wednesday.
Contesting Pool A, Fujian lost only one match to Binh Dien Long An, while Est Cola also went down to the host side in their opening encounter. The Wednesday’s match between Fujian and Est Cola decided the second team from Pool A to join Binh Dien Long An in the semi-finals. The host side had already booked their ticket to the semi-finals following their two wins in a row.
Against the formidable Chinese side, Est Cola fought hard to win the close first set 26-24. However, their fine form was short-lived when Fujian put their acts together to play more consistently. Their determination bore fruits when the Chinese clinched the hard-fought second set 27-25 and went on to win the remaining two comfortable sets 25-18 25-17 and match.
Zheng Yixin topscored Fujian with 21 points including 13 kills from 34 attempts, while Liu Yang also attacked well to contribute 15 points including 13 attacks. Oanchisa Lonok scored a team-high 19 points for Est Cola.
In the other match on Wednesday, Binh Dien Long An continued their remarkable unbeaten run in the one-week tournament after wedging out Thong tin LVPB in dramatic four-setter 25-23 25-19 23-25 25-19.
Nguyen Thi Trinh led Binh Dien with 16 points, all of them from attack hits, while Pham Thi Nguyet Anh bagged 16 points for Thong tin LVPB.
At the end of the preliminary Pool A matches on Wednesday, hosts Binh Dien Long An captured the top spot in Pool A with 9 points from three straight wins, followed by Fujian with 5 points from two wins against one loss. Est Cola finished third in the pool with 3 points from one win against two losses and Thong tin LVPB had only 1 point from three successive losses.
With only top two teams from each pool advancing, Binh Dien Long An and Fujian booked their berths to the semi-finals, while Est Cola from Thailand and Thong tin LVPB were relegated to the 5th-8th classification round.
On Thursday, pace-setters USA’s BIP (Bring It Promotions) play Jiangsu from China in a match to decide the Pool B winners. Both teams had already advanced to the semi-finals. Almaty from Kazakhstan and Vietinbank, trailing in third and fourth places in the pool, will meet each other in their final preliminary Pool B match.
Friday will be the rest day. The competition resumes the following day in the semi-finals and the 5th-8th classification.
