Quang Nam, Vietnam, May 17, 2018 – Fired-up Jiangsu handed BIP (Bring It Promotions) the first loss in the 12th VTV9 Binh Dien Cup International Women’s Volleyball Tournament after edging the American side in hard-fought five-setter at the Tamky Gym in Quang Nam on Friday.

Contesting their final preliminary Pool B match against BIP to decide the pool winners, Jiangsu, spearheaded by hard-hitting Wu Han, Xu Ruoya and Zhou Xinyi, defied against all odds to overpower the Americans in thrilling five sets 25-19 23-25 25-19 23-25 15-4. The hard-fought win has earned Jiangsu a semi-final berth against Fujian in the all-Chinese affair.

The other match on Thursday saw Vietinbank send Almaty from Kazakhstan packing in convincing three sets 25-13 25-10 25-17.

The pool preliminaries ended on Thursday, with hosts VTV Binh Dien Long An making a clean sweep in Pool A with 9 points from three wins in a row. China’s Fujian came in second place with 5 points from two wins against one loss, while Est Cola from Thailand finished third with 3 points from one win against disappointing two losses. Thong tin LVPB finished on the bottom at the pool standing with 1 point from three straight losses.

In Pool B, Jiangsu captured the top spot with 7 points from three consecutive victories. BIP bagged the similar 7 points from two wins against one loss. Vietinbank finished third with 3 points from two losses against one win, with winless Almaty from Kazakhstan in fourth place with only 1 point.

With only top two teams from each pool advancing, VTV Binh Dien Long An and Fujian from Pool A and Jiangsu and BIP from Pool B made the cut for the cross semi-finals. Teams finishing third and fourth places will next compete in the 5th-8h classification.

Friday is the rest day. The competition resumes on Saturday, the penultimate day of the one-week tournament, with Thailand’s Est Cola facing Kazakhstan’s Almaty and Vietinbank playing Thong tin LVPB in the 5th-8th classification round.

On the same day, Jiangsu will challenge Fujian in the all-Chinese clash, with USA’s BIP going up against VTV Binh Dien Long An in the other semi-final encounter.
