THAILAND RETAIN SEA WOMEN’S U17 TITLE

Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, May 17, 2018 – Reigning champions Thailand continued their aura of invincibility following a comfortable 25-10, 25-8, 25-7 win over India in the completely one-sided final showdown to successfully retain their crown at the “Princess Cup” 20th Est Cola South East Asian Women’s U17 Volleyball Championship at the Nakhon Pathom Sports Centre Gymnasium on Thursday.

Wiranyupa Inchan scored a team-high 10 points including 7 attacks from 8 attempts, wile Ghosh Disha claimed 4 points for India.

“The result meets our initial target although my players still have something to learn and improve. We prepared well for this match as we studied the India’s game before the match. India didn’t show their best because we tried to put pressure on them with effective serving and it worked out pretty well. We also played with less mistakes, so I am quite satisfied with my girls’ performance,” Thailand head coach Chamnan Dokmai said after the victory.

“It is a good preparation for our team for the Asian Women’s U17 Championship where we will face stronger opponents. Our goal is to qualify for the World Championship. We will try our best,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan came back from one set down to storm past Australia 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-17) in the third-place playoff to return with bronze medal.

Samal Ibrayeva topscored Kazakhstan with 12 points, while Zhannel Nogaibayeya and Kristina Strukova added another 11 points apiece. Annelies Jones led Australia with 10 points.

The fifth-place playoff saw Malaysia prove a cut above New Zealand to seal a convincing 25-23 25-11 25-20 win over the Kiwis.

Jia Tian Yong topscored Malaysia with 15 points for the team’s victory, while Irene Qi Min Siah added 14 points. Caitlin Studer led New Zealand with 11 Points.

After this, the Nakhon Pathom Sports Centre Gymnasium here will turn into the battle ground for the 12th Asian Women’s U17 Volleyball Championship between May 20 and 27, with a total of 12 teams including defending champions Japan vying for the top honour and four slots for the next year’s FIVB World Championship, which will be hosted by Mexico.
