Quang Nam, Vietnam, May 10, 2018 – Volleyball fever has gripped Vietnam ahead of the 19th Asian Women’s U19 Championship when the country will host the 12th VTV9 Binh Dien Cup in Quang Nam from May 12 to 20, with eight strong teams including Fujian and Jiangsu from China testing their mettle.

Hosts VTV Binh Dien are in Pool A with Fujian, Thong tin LVPB and Est Cola from Thailand, while Pool B comprises BIP from the United States, Jiangsu, Kazakhstan’s Almaty and Vietinbank.

The pool round-robin preliminaries will be held from May 12 to 17, with China’s Fujian taking on Thong tin LVPB in the curtain-raisers. All participating teams will then take part in the opening ceremony on May 12, followed by the opening encounter between hosts VTV Binh Dien and Est Cola.

A tense battle can be expected in the match on the opening day between VTV Binh Dien and the Thai team. As the host side will be strengthened by two key Vietnam national team players, the 192cm Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and veteran Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hoa, Est Cola will also field a strong roster with the likes of three Thailand national players, Wilavan Apinyapong, Jarasporn Bundasak and Tapaphaipun Chaisri.

However, all eyes will be on Almaty, whose players are those from the Kazakhstan national team in their preparation for several major tournaments this year including the Asian Games in Indonesia, the AVC Cup for Women and the FIVB Women’s World Championship.

China’s Fujian and Jiangsu Clubs are also expected to mount a strong challenge against the other teams. Jiangsu in particular will field an eye-catching player in Gong Xiangyu, who competed in the Rio Games gold-winning China team. The other formidable players in the squad included Tang Ningya, Zhang Yiwen, Xu Ruoya, Liu Yan and the 193cm-tall Wang Chenyue.

After the preliminaries, teams will be ranked respectively according to their pool performances. Only the top two teams will contest the cross semi-finals, with the team finishing first in Pool A taking on the team finishing second in Pool B and the best-ranked team in Pool B going up against the second best-ranked team in Pool A. Teams finishing third and fourth places in each pool will compete in the 5th-8th classification round.

The 12th VTV9 Binh Dien Cup in Quang Nam serves as an hors d’oeuvre for Vietnamese fans as next month, the country will become the battle ground for the 19th Asian Women’s U19 Championship in Bac Ninh between June 10 and 17. A total of 16 teams confirmed their participation in the one-week championship, vying for the top honour and two tickets to contest the 2019 FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship.

In the previous edition last year, Thailand’s Bangkok Glass VC captured the crown, thrashing hosts VTV Binh Dien 3-1 in the final showdown. The third place went to China’s Yunnan.
