Canterbury and Harbour net volleyball championship titles

Wellington,New Zealand,June 6, 2018 -Teams from North Harbour and Canterbury have claimed the top honours at the 2018 Volleyball New Zealand Provincial Championships in Wellington last night.

North Harbour proved to be the power province, winning four of the six titles including the open men’s, under-20 men’s and women’s and the under-17 women’s division as well as finishing second in the open women’s and under-17 divisions. Wellington claimed the under-17 men’s division.

The open men’s final saw North Harbour up against Bay of Plenty. Despite some close plays North Harbour took the win in three straight sets.

Canterbury outplayed their northern opponents North Harbour to take the open women’s title with a score of 3-2 in a cat and mouse final, while Waikato scored bronze ahead of Bay of Plenty.

North Harbour players also scooped a number of most valuable player awards. Passer and hitter Rob Tarr took the open men’s award and setter Markareta Rademakers earned the open women’s crown.

Other North Harbour players earning the most valuable player award included Tamara Otene (under-20 women), Tana Milton (under-20 men) and Emilia Shearer (under-17 women). Joshua Tutahalevao of Wellington was awarded the under-17 men’s most valuable player title.

The New Zealand Women’s Team will now take on Australia in a three match test series in Wellington.

The match series will be played out over three nights beginning on Wednesday night at the Te Rauparaha Arena, Porirua, Thursday night at the ASB Sports Centre, Kilbirnie and concluding on Friday night at Walter Nash Centre, Hutt Valley.
