CHINESE TAIPEI STRUGGLE TO BEAT KOREA IN TIE-BREAKER
Bac Ninh, Vietnam, June 10, 2018 – In a display somewhere near their best, Chinese Taipei overpowered Korea in hard-fought five-set thriller 25-17 25-17 22-25 15-25 15-13 to taste their first win at the 19th Asian Women’s U19 Volleyball Championship at the Bac Ninh Gymnasium here on Sunday.
Yeh Yu-Wen charted 19 points for Chinese Taipei including 14 attacks and 4 stuff blocks, with Tsai Yu-Chun adding 16 crucial points for the winning team. Lee Juah led Korea with 16 points including 13 kills from 27 attempts, while Jung Hoyoung contributed 14 points.
In the first set, Chinese Taipei were handed a serious threat by the Korean attacks led by powerful Park Hyemin, but still played exceptionally well under pressure. Chinese Taipei used a stubborn defence and great serves from Ni Tsai-Yu to take the first set 25-17.
Their confidence boosted following the first-set win, Chinese Taipei went on their good show in the second set, with Yeh Yu-Wen, Tsai Yu-Chun and Wu Fang-Yu penetrating the Korean defence with their attacks to clinch the set with the similar margin 25-17.
Going down successive two sets, Korea came all-out to lead Chinese Taipei all the ways. Trailing in vain 17-21, Chinese Taipei put their acts together and reduced the gap 20-23, but the Koreans proved how far they have come to seize the close set 25-22. The fourth set was still dominated by the Koreans, who outperformed the formidable rivals 25-15.
Both sides fought hard in the decider, but Chinese Taipei played more consistently to win the tie-breaker 15-13.
“Middle blockers are our main weapons in today’s victory over Korea. In the third and fourth sets, we could not overcome high blocks from Korea. They are a very strong team and I think we are lucky to beat them. Against Kazakhstan in our next match, I can’t say anything now since we have yet seen their performance. However, we will do our best,” Chinese Taipei coach Kuang Chin-Tu commented.
