INFLUENTIAL CHANG, JACKMAN HAND CHINESE TAIPEI WINNING START
Tabriz, Iran, 30 June 2018 – Chang H.Y. and Jackman provided the spark for Chinese Taipei to finish with a gritty 3-set victory (25-20, 25-23, 25-19) over Asian powerhouse Iran at Poursharifi Gymnasium.
This was an intriguing match-up between two high quality sides, but it was Taipei who got the better in front of Iranian home crowd although it was far from easy against determined opposition.
Taipei had Chang H.Y. to thank for a commanding attacking performance which yielded 12 points, but their star man was also erratic with his serving.
Jackman (12 points) also produced some big moments. Taipei often utilized a 3-man blocking technique to great effect, but it was their extra attacking flair that gave them the edge in a tight match.
Iran’s No. 8 Amir Hoseein Hemmati was the scoring machine with 12 points while Bardia Saadat (9 points) were also influential. Iran were terrific but were ultimately outgunned with the magnificent performance of the young players of Taipei.
“I do not want to underestimate the effort of the Taipei and I have to confess that they deserve victory and did better than us. I have to trust my players and let them find themselves in future. I believe no winning team is the champion and no losing team has to stay out of the tournament. We did not perform well today on our receptions and their attacks put my team into trouble. My players also made so many mistakes that is very natural in this age that is to be removed. I cannot say that my players did not play as they fight up to the last moment and we could have also won the second set”. Iran coach Reza Vakili after the match commented.
