HOSTS CHINA REGISTER FIRST VICTORY AT AVC EASTERN ZONE WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

Zhangjiagang, China, July 11, 2018 – The 2018 AVC Eastern Zone Women’s Volleyball Championship opened up at Zhangjiagang Sports Center Gymnasium on Tuesday afternoon, with hosts China delighting home crowds with a scintillating 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 27-25) win in their first match against Korea.

The match started after a grand but short opening ceremony. Eager to give their best performance to their fans, China, fielding most players from Zhejiang Jiashan Club team, started the game with their strength and power. In a short time, China established a big lead and finished the first set 25-17.

Korea adjusted themselves in the second set and focused on their defense to take an initial 10-7 lead, forcing China to call a timeout. China made best use of their height advantage and gradually took back the initiative. They caught up to a 21-21 tie and went on to seal the second set 27-25.

China maintained their momentum in the third set to take the lead with three-point clear 10-7. Korea had to call a timeout and their intention worked out pretty well that they reversed the situation to an 18-15 lead benefiting from many unforced mistakes by China. However, the mighty Chinese refused to be dragged to the fourth set as they upped their poise and concluded the third set with the same margin 27-25.

In the opening match earlier, reigning champions Chinese Taipei took on Japan in a rematch of the final showdown at the previous edition. This time, Japan proved their superiority by sweeping the formidable rivals in straight sets 25-15, 25-20, 25-22 in 71 minutes.

Elsewhere, DPR Korea pulled off a lop-sided win against Macao following the 25-12, 25-15, 25-16 win in 67 minutes, while Hong Kong prevailed over Mongolia 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-23).

The 2018 AVC Eastern Zone Women’s Championship (Zhangjiagang, China) presented by Huachang Group will continue at the Zhangjiagang Sports Center Gymnasium. The pool plays will be concluded on July 12 and top two teams from each pool will advance to the semi-finals, while the two lowered-ranked teams from each pool will contest the 5th-8th playoffs. The final showdown will be held on July 15.
